Small Feathers from 'etudes'

Starting a new collection of compositions and recordings for the new year, Etudes will be coming soon, a collection of short piano pieces inspired by modern music. Leaning on improvisation techniques, I'm often reminded that improv is by no means the preserve of modern music. The famed classical composers often wowed their audiences not only with new compositions but with wide ranging improvisational performances around their newly written themes. Beethoven famously sat down to play one of his new pieces for some friends and didn't stop until two hour later. Of course, our times more often associate improvisation with Jazz, and the greats of the 20th century were carrying on the interest of musicians and composers in exploring music, finding the edges, and new ways of listening too.
