In Tribute to Harold Budd, composer
The
last few weeks have been a busy time, listening, recording and
producing. The long awaited Somewhere Nearby album is due for release
with the Off-Records Label on January 15th. The inspirational composer Harold Budd was
tragically lost to the Virus on December 8th. His work, especially the
piano studies "Perhaps" and the lovely "La Belle Vista" a series of solo
piano recordings made by U2's Canadian producer Daniel Lanois - who also produced the Budd/Brian Eno collaboration "The Pearl" in 1984. The Pearl was recorded in Lanois' studio in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Budd was known for his 'soft pedal' technique, minimalist approach and to some as a founding figure in what has become known as "Ambient" music (though Budd always dismissed the term, saying he preferred not to think of music in categories).
This post now ends with a tribute to Budd from me and The Piano Lounge, a short piano composition currently titled "study 5 in F sharp", one in a new series of etudes for solo piano and sound, which will be released next year. If you would like to preorder/order existing/future downloads, find out more about available releases, or how to support new music from The Piano Lounge and Mac Dunlop, then check out the bandcamp link below.
stayed tuned for the release of the new album "Somewhere Nearby" in January.
